Fast Food Review: P’Zone from Pizza Hut

It’s seems as though the well has run dry with new and inventive pizzas.  Creative ideas such as “stuffed crust pizza” are great, but these gimmicks come and go all the time.  The big 3…Pizza Hut, Domino’s and Papa John’s continuously duke it out for pizza supremacy.  Pizza Hut looks to take an edge with their P’Zone.

Pizza Hut P'Zone Box

As I’m sure everyone knows, the P’Zone is simply a variety of calzone.  Weighing in at around 1.07 pounds, the P’Zone (introduced in 2002) makes itself known as a heavyweight.  Printed on the side of the box is a caution of “Heavy Lifting Required”.  Each P’Zone is made with a folded 12-inch traditional crust, a layer of sliced mozzarella cheese and a choice of three different ingredient combinations: (Pepperoni) jam packed with pepperoni; (Meaty) includes pepperoni, sausage, seasoned beef and ham; (Classic) sausage with green peppers and red onions.  Each P’Zone is served with a generous portion of marinara sauce.  A nice change from the standard pizza, the P’Zone is more of a personal item than a shareable.  At a price tag of $6.99 for one or $12.99 if you order two, the P’Zone has recently gone up in price by at least a dollar.

Fun fact about the P’Zone, competitive eating champion Joey Chestnutt currently holds the world record of eating 4.82 pounds (4 and 1/2 P’Zones) in 6 minutes.  Watch the video.  All 3 P’Zone options offer something to satisfy your hunger while pleasing your taste buds.  I believe whether you choose the Pepperoni, Meaty or Classic you are assured to be filled up and happy.

  • Pros–  Flavorful crust.  Satisfies a big hunger.  3 filling options.  Side of marinara sauce.
  • Cons–  Recent price increase.  No customization.

  1. Hmmm…they need to do a chocolate p’zone. About twice a year my wife and I make chocolate calzones and they’re soo good!
Glad to see you’re up and running so quickly, Ryan! I got your link from your comment on FFC. There’s some mighty good reading here.

  2. Yeah Ryan, good luck, and I hope you can keep this running. You need to get the word out that you’re doing this…..as Ross noted, the only way I knew to find this was via that FFC post. I’ve not seen any mention of it on the other food blogs. Might want to contact them all.

  3. For something so large, it looks like it might be a good for 2 smaller meals instead of one.
Good to see the crust is flavorful too… that way if you get a bite without meat, you still are getting good flavor. nice review!
haven’t gotten one of these yet, but might have to finally try one!

  4. Yeah John….
It’s definitely filling…not sure if it would be satisfying enough for 2 smaller meals but it would go well to split an order of wings and half a P’Zone.

  5. I am surprised by the high rating, but I guess food opinions are just as subjective as music opinions.

I find the P’zones to be rather bland and dry. Even with the dipping sauce. They just don’t taste very good at all. I’ve tried them from more than Pizza Hut as well, but with the same results. Epic fail for me.

  6. Major oversight by Pizza Hut to not offer a meatless version. The vegetarian/health(ier) market is big and growing. ANyways, I had a P’zone when they first came out years ago. I agree with Raider757. Inexplicably flavorless. Easily the worst calzone I’ve ever eaten.
