First Impressions: Midnight Truffle Blizzard from DQ

Just sampled the “Blizzard of the Month” for April over at Dairy Queen.  The Midnight Truffle Blizzard is overwhelmingly chocolaty.  I figured by the pics released on the DQ website that it would be chocolate ice cream and chocolate truffles.  Well it’s vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup and a TON of small chocolate truffles.  The fact that the ice cream was vanilla and not chocolate does absolutely nothing to cover up the fact that this thing is so packed with rich chocolate taste.  It seems like with each bite there were at least 2 small truffles/truffle pieces.  So rich…if you are in to chocolate you will look passed the fact that there isn’t chocolate ice cream in it.  Here are some pics.

Food News: Baskin Robbins 31 Cent Scoop Night

April 29th, mark you calendars!!!  Between 5pm and 10pm Baskin Robbins will reduce the price of a small cone to 31 cents. So hopefully the 29th will be a nice warm spring evening and you can enjoy some delicious ice cream for a ridiculously low price.  Not only will you be saving money but you will be contributing to a good cause.  On this night Baskin Robbins will be making a $100,000 donation to the National Volunteer Fire Council National Junior Firefighter program.  This program provides the tools and resources for fire departments to promote local programs to the youth.  The youth learn about all aspects of firefighting services and this in turn becomes a great recruiting tool for future firefighters.

So on April 29th, don’t forget to get yourself some ice cream and help out a good cause at the same time.

Food News: Midnight Truffle Blizzard from Dairy Queen

Today is the beginning of a new month and that means it’s time for a new Dairy Queen Blizzard.  The newest edition of Dairy Queen’s Blizzard of the Month has been unveiled.  Last month “DQ” released the Mint Oreo Blizzard,  April’s treat is the Midnight Truffle Blizzard.  This latest “blizzard of the month” sounds like a chocolate lovers dream.   It combines rich chocolate truffles and chunks of cocoa fudge with silky vanilla soft serve ice cream.  You cannot go wrong with the chocolate and vanilla combination.

I usually like to keep my ice cream simple, plain chocolate or vanilla with some crushed oreos, but there are some who love really rich, decadent desserts.  If you are one of those people this sounds like the blizzard for you.

Featured Restaurant: a.k.a. Friscos

Written by Heather, GrubGrade Contributor

Located amongst storage units, a.k.a Friscos makes you work a little to find it.  Featuring a nice selection of big sandwiches and salads, a.k.a. Friscos makes their name known locally by the exploded potatoes.  Located off of the beaten path in Frederick, Maryland, this “hidden treasure” is one you won’t want to pass up.

a.k.a. Friscos Restaurant

a.k.a. Friscos is famous for their Exploded Potatoes which is somewhat of a “family secret recipe”.  They describe it on their menu as  “A FRISCOS ORIGINAL!!!”   This isn’t your ordinary potato salad.   I can best describe it as a smashed up baked potato with a ton of toppings piled on.  The Friscos menu also holds a nice variety of Giant Sandwiches, Big Fresh Salads, Bakers, Grill, Sides and Appetizers.  Some of their specialties feature alfalfa sprouts, avocado and their own “Wicked Wolf” hot sauce.  At this Friscos restaurant (there used to be a location in Washington, DC, but it is now closed) you can dine-in or reserve their upstairs dining area for semi-private dining for up to 20 people.  They also have a catering service where all items of the menu are offered in party size platters.  In their Beer, Wine and Carryout they carry 90 different wines, and have monthly wine tastings.  You can also order anything on the menu for carryout.

In the warmer months, you can enjoy your meal outside and have your dessert at their “Way Cool Ice Cream” stand which is located in between the dining area and the Beer, Wine and Carryout section.  The Way Cool Ice Cream stand offers up real ice cream, Way Coolers (fruit smoothies topped with ice cream), shaved ice blasters, fruit smoothies, floats, shakes, sundaes, mud pies and cones.

Food News: Starbucks Ice Cream

Some of us cannot do without our daily coffee.  Before you know it, 90 degree weather will be upon us and that hot cup of joe isn’t so refreshing.  Starbucks has the solution for your summer coffee fix with its new “Premium” line of ice cream.  The new line is now sold only at select grocers and should be more widely available as the warmer weather moves in.  There are four new flavors based on their current hot and cold drinks.

  • Caramel Macchiato– Vanila & Coffee ice cream with ribbons of caramel
  • Mocha Frappuccino– Coffee ice cream swirled with chocolate ice cream
  • Java Chip Frappuccino– Coffee ice cream with dark chocolate chunks
  • Coffee– Coffee ice cream swirled with Espresso ice cream

I’m not much of a coffee drinker, but oddly I do enjoy coffee ice cream.  The combinations Starbucks has come up with sound tasty.  The Mocha Frappuccino sounds especially good.  You cannot go wrong with the chocolate and coffee combination.  The frozen treats will run you $3.99 for a pint.  Pretty decent price considering what a single cup of Starbucks coffee can run you.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

After being up for a couple of days, the Shamrock Shake vs Mint Oreo Blizzard Poll shows that 57 out of 111 voters would at least choose Dairy Queen’s Mint Oreo Blizzard.  49 voters chose the Blizzard and 8 voters chose both the Blizzard and the McDonald’s Shamrock Shake.  As I expected, looks like the Oreo cookie puts DQ in the winners circle.
